Have we learned our lesson? Are we prepared for the worst case scenario? Since Katrina hit our Mardi Gras shore, there has been major urging to the American people to build their back-up supplly of food, water and medical supplies. But have we taken the advice?
Analysts across the nation have told us that many would have survived the natural disaster if they had been prepared. Many of us are under the assumption that if a disaster were to occur near our home, we would simply rush to the Grocery Store and purchase a supply of food. However, grocery stores across the country are limited to carrying two days of supplies on hand. Therefore many of our families would be left with no option but to wait for help, however long that may be.
Often referred to as modern-day survivalist, or neo-survivalist, Preppers have had a gradual growth in members since Katrina. By definition a Prepper is an individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances or lifestyle without significant reliance on other persons or without substantial assistance from outside resources (govt., etc.) in order to minimize the effects of that change on their current lifestyle. You can visit PREPPER.org to look at your state’s resources for preparedness.
How does one start in preparing for the worst? By referring to networks and forums such as The American Preppers Network you can find tremendous resources for purchasing affordable freeze-dried food, officiant water filters and gardening. Many of the networks urge people to “get back to the basics” of life by simplifying their lives and relying on less. Many prepper networks refer to patriotfood.com for the most nutritious selection of food for you and your family at an affordable price.
On an ending note, we have been convinced that as a people the safest way to live is with health insurance, so why wouldn’t we have food insurance?
